About Us

SoundNorth is a specialty audio/video and home theater dealer, dedicated to providing expert advice, quality products, cutting edge technology, exceptional installations and excellent customer service. We specialize in design, sales, and installation of flat panel televisions, home theater systems, whole house audio and video distribution systems, and digital media networking.

We have been providing exceptional sales and service throughout the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and northern Wisconsin since 1953, when Dick & Jean Abraham opened J&R Electronics, our precursor store. They were well known for state-of-the-art technology, and strung the first cable for what became Bresnan Cable (later bought & expanded by Charter).

When Dick & Jean decided to expand their sales of electronics, SoundNorth was born. For a time, they operated a whole chain of SoundNorths, but eventually they consolidated them into a flagship store at the Midtown Mall. The next owner, Dave Weber, bought SoundNorth from Dick and moved the store into a new building at 1220 S Stephenson (US 2), where it stayed for 28 years.

After 15 years working as a service manager with Dave, Mark Lies bought the store and moved it to 1111 S. Carpenter Avenue in Kingsford, where it remains today. With a dedicated and professional staff, SoundNorth has continued to design audio and video solutions for all our customers' needs. We've faced competition from American, Walmart, Best Buy, and the Internet, but we've never compromised our dedication to high-quality sales and service. We're proud to have logged more than 57 years of success in the community, and we aim to still be here when we're 100.
